Tax IDs and licenses for an entertainment company in Los Angeles, CA

Short answer: An entertainment company in Los Angeles, CA needs the federal tax ID (EIN), the California seller's permit if you sell products along with the service, an employer tax ID once it hires, and a business license where it operates.

🗂 Your tax ID wallet: 4 IDs for an entertainment company

Tax IDDo you need it?Why it matters
California seller's permitIf you sell productsMany states don't tax the service, but they do tax the goods sold with it.
Federal tax ID (EIN)YesAn entertainment company needs an EIN to pay performers and crew, open an account for event income and complete venue W-9 forms.
California employer tax ID (state EIN)When you hireIt works like the EIN for California payroll: withholding from paychecks plus unemployment insurance.
Business tax ID (business license)YesIt registers the business where it operates; home businesses often add a home occupation permit.

🏗 Pick your structure

An LLC puts a legal wall between you and the business, which matters the day a customer, a landlord or a supplier sues. A corporation fits better if you plan to bring in investors or sell shares. Operating under a brand name as a sole owner? File a fictitious business name statement. Note that California also requires the statement to run in a legal newspaper, then proof of publication is filed. An LLC that uses its exact registered name needs no separate filing.

💼 What your tax IDs do for you

  • The sales tax ID lets you give suppliers a resale certificate, so inventory you resell is bought without sales tax.
  • Suppliers and card issuers build a business credit history under your EIN, separate from your personal score.
  • Clients, platforms and suppliers get your EIN on their W-9 forms instead of your Social Security number, which means fewer copies of it floating around.

⚠️ Traps to avoid

  1. Playing copyrighted music or showing protected content at paid events without proper licensing can bring demands from rights organizations.
  2. Booking performers as contractors without written agreements leaves unclear who handles insurance, payment, cancellations and any injuries at the event.
  3. Mixing personal and business money in one account: it muddies your deductions and can weaken an LLC's protection.
  4. Thinking a DBA protects your house: it registers a name only; an LLC or corporation is what creates a separate legal person.

📋 Also on the list for an entertainment company

  • Business license
  • Venue or performance permits
  • Music licensing
🎫 Order two or more licenses or documents and get $50 off. That's your tax ID free, right in the cart.

Tip: Collect deposits in writing and use contracts that spell out cancellation terms, because events are often rescheduled and cash flow depends on advance payments.

Industry code: NAICS 711310 (Promoters of Performing Arts, Sports, and Similar Events with Facilities).

Your Social Security number has been working alone for decades. Give it some help.

Tax IDs and licenses for an entertainment company

Short answer: Four IDs cover an entertainment company: the federal EIN, a state sales tax ID if it sells products along with the service, a state employer ID for payroll, and a business license.

🗂 Your tax ID wallet: 4 IDs for an entertainment company

Tax IDDo you need it?Why it matters
State sales tax ID (seller's permit)If you sell productsThe service itself is often untaxed, but products you sell or install usually are.
Federal tax ID (EIN)YesAn entertainment company needs an EIN to pay performers and crew, open an account for event income and complete venue W-9 forms.
State employer tax ID (state EIN)When you hirePays state withholding and unemployment insurance; in states without a wage income tax, such as Texas and Florida, it covers unemployment insurance only.
Business tax ID (business license)YesNearly every city or county where you operate requires it; home businesses often add a home occupation permit.

🏗 Pick your structure

An LLC is the popular choice: it separates your personal savings from the business's debts and lawsuits, and profits still pass through to your own return. If investors are in your plans, a corporation is built for that. A sole owner with a brand name files a DBA (assumed name, fictitious business name or trade name, depending on the state), and some states add a newspaper notice. Forming the LLC under that exact name makes the DBA unnecessary.

💼 What your tax IDs do for you

  • The business license is the paper landlords, insurers and event organizers ask to see before they sign anything.
  • Clients, platforms and suppliers get your EIN on their W-9 forms instead of your Social Security number, which means fewer copies of it floating around.
  • The sales tax ID lets you give suppliers a resale certificate, so inventory you resell is bought without sales tax.

  3. Selling online into other states without watching their sales thresholds: past a certain volume, you may owe their sales tax too.
  4. Thinking a DBA protects your house: it registers a name only; an LLC or corporation is what creates a separate legal person.

📋 Also on the list for an entertainment company

Get the numbers right once and they work quietly for years, which is more than most employees promise.

REQUIRED LICENSES
Legal Structure

Whether an online, home, store, concession stand or a mobile cart, you will need to first select among sole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation, all of which also require a General Business License (not a specific license to your type of business) as well. If your trade name is a business name other than your full personal legal name, you will need to file a DBA . For instance, your name is John Doe, and you do business as Best Widgets By John, the name must be registered with a DBA Biz Name because it is not your full legal name. Also, note that whatever item that you sell or lease and it is an item that can be touched (i.e., tangible such as equipment, toys, merchandise, electronics, prepared food) requires a state sales tax ID ( Sellers Permit ) to either buy or sell the items or products wholesale and or sell them retail. If you are hiring workers anytime soon, you will need a Federal EIN and a State EIN (employer identification number). Other instances that you will need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or an LLC . You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other registrations, such as licenses, an assumed business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even one person, sole owner/proprietors working from home or just online can form a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to file a DBA.

If you are thinking of hiring help, you will need a tax id called a state EIN and an IRS tax id number called an EIN Employer ID Number. I.e., a CA Federal Tax Id Number and a(n) CA  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing in Los Angeles, Incorporate in CA  or form a(n) CA LLC

THERE ARE 4 TAX IDS: A federal tax ID, a Sales Tax ID, a State employer Tax ID, and a Business Tax Registration ID.

Starting businesses need a tax registration business ID ( AKA business license or home occupation permit.) A sole owner can obtain a federal tax ID number (recommended) to use it as a business tax ID. This is because a business must be identified with a business tax ID. If it does not have a federal tax ID a sole proprietor uses his or her social security card to identify the business. However, if the business is a sole proprietor, it does not need a tax ID unless it is an employer, in which case it will need a federal ID and a State Employer ID (employer identification number). If the new small business will sell or lease any merchandise equipment or sell any items wholesale or retail or buy wholesale it will need a sales tax ID number also called a resale ID, a state sales tax ID, wholesale ID or resale license. Partnerships need at least a federal tax ID number and a fictitious business name registration. Finally, anyone, even one person can be an LLC or corporation.

How do I register a record label company in New York, and what do I need?
    AK .
      AK.
Start with an LLC or corporation in New York; New York LLCs must also publish a notice of formation in newspapers within a few months of filing. Get the company's EIN, a New York certificate of authority for sales tax if you sell physical merchandise like vinyl or shirts, and an assumed name certificate if the label uses a different name. Contracts with artists and copyright registrations are the label's real assets, so get them in writing.

My husband and I want to start a residential and commercial cleaning business. What paperwork do we need? And is a seller's permit the same as a sales tax license?
      .
       .
Yes, seller's permit, sales tax license and sales tax ID are different names for the same thing, and cleaning businesses often don't need one, since most states don't tax cleaning services. A couple running it together needs a partnership or LLC with its own EIN, a business license where you operate, liability insurance and a janitorial bond for commercial clients, and employer accounts once you hire.
      10/28/2026 5:55 AM :
I just want to set up an LLC for a simple cleaning company. It's only me.
      .
       .
A one-person cleaning LLC needs three things: the LLC filing, an EIN for the business bank account, and a business license where you work. In Wyoming, cleaning services generally aren't subject to sales tax unless you sell products, and with no employees there's no employer account yet. Bonding and liability insurance are what clients ask for, so add them early.
